mikenelsonRecently, while interviewing Mike Nelson about RIFFTRAX for another publication, the conversation turned to books, and what couldn’t be used there can be used here. After serving as head writer and host of TV’s long-running MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000, Nelson wrote a few books, including MIKE NELSON’S MOVIE MEGACHEESE, MIKE NELSON’S MIND OVER MATTERS and the novel DEATH RAT! moviemegacheeseBOOKGASM: Have you thought about self-publishing?

NELSON: Well, I’ve considered self-publishing because, in the end, what the publishers take and what they give you are … there’s sort of a wide gulf there, so, yeah, I’ve considered it. I just haven’t had a moment since starting RIFFTRAX.

BOOKGASM: I’d like to think you have enough of a built-in fan base to make it work for you.

NELSON: It’s probably true, even though obviously, it seems like books go, you’re either a blockbuster or you’re just lost in a huge pile of other stuff. If you can sort of carve out your own niche, why not? —Rod Lott
