You can't go wrong with Hard Case Crime (even the few "bad" ones are worth keeping for the covers) or Max Allan Collins.

Hardcase crime is great.

I've been collecting Collins for a while. Only need one book in the Nolan series and one in the Quarry series.

I really enjoy Wolfe's stories, but Wolfe is a jerk. Once you come to terms with that, the stories make more sense.

I have several Hard Case Crime novels (been collecting the McGinnis covers) and read my first, Kill Now, Pay Later by Robert Terrall this year and really, really enjoyed it. I read some thing by or about Max Allan Collins recently and it made me want to check out his stuff and, coincidentally, I have been wanting to pick up this one because I like the cover as well. So, you've sold me! I really just started reading crime fiction this past year and enjoyed it but didn't get enough of it done in 08.
