After selling his first novel in 1991, World Fantasy Award winner Graham Joyce has pursued writing full-time. He teaches creative writing to grad students at Nottingham Trent University, and his current novel is HOW TO MAKE FRIENDS WITH DEMONS, published by Night Shade Books.

Author/filmmaker Mick Garris chatted with us to promote RIDING THE BULLET: THE DELUXE SPECIAL EDITION DOUBLE from LonelyRoad Books, which includes Garris’ screenplay for the movie with Stephen King’s original novella.
BOOKGASM: Was your ultimate goal to be a filmmaker, did you just fall into it in large part to your break on Steven Spielberg’s AMAZING STORIES, or did you just want to be a storyteller, regardless of the medium?
GARRIS: I actually started writing fiction when I was about 12, after having been all about drawing. My father had gone to art school, and was a pretty good artist who was never able to make a living at it. Once I started writing, I quit drawing; I originally wanted to be a cartoonist and animator.

Stephen King’s RIDING THE BULLET novella was originally published online in 1999. It was the first thing the author wrote after the horrific accident that nearly ended his life. It also presented King with his closest glimpse of the Grim Reaper yet. All of us have dealt with death and dying to some extent, but how many of us were on our own deathbed? And how many of us can put that experience into words like King?
